We have attended performances by different companies and noted which have been our favorites. To our great disappointment, all the local in-person performances have been cancelled this year. While live streaming is an option, it can't replace the magic of sitting in the audience and sharing the moment by moment. So, we'll be watching this, instead.

We’ve been homeschoolers for almost a decade now We’ve been homeschoolers for almost a decade now.  And, frankly, I can’t imagine living any differently, nor would I want to.  But, for those parents who are, in effect, being forced to choose an educational path for their children, the mere idea of homeschooling can be daunting, at best, and overwhelmingly paralyzing.  Sometimes, it is all too easy for me to “forget” the confusion and anxiety of those early years and the pressure I felt to “have it all figured out”.
*
*
But, here’s the thing.  Homeschooling isn’t a destination, an end goal.  It’s a journey, a path filled with turn-offs, bumps, detours and so many other twist and turns to navigate.  Granted, school-at-home, or the online learning option that is available to families, certainly has an end goal.  But, remember, that isn’t homeschooling.  Homeschooling is about providing a learning environment that is personalized to your child, where your child is able to learn at his or her own pace.  And, because each child is unique, so is each homeschooling experience.
*
*
That being the case, as I reflect on our journey, I believe there are a few principles that can guide your homeschooling, should you choose that path.

So often, indeed, too often, the dominant parentin So often, indeed, too often, the dominant parenting culture focuses on children's behaviour as the cause for all that is "wrong" in their family life, or at least, not going right. It is so sad to witness children suffering because of the parents' lack of awareness.

My daughter has LONG hair. Other than a few minor My daughter has LONG hair. Other than a few minor trims, and one brief foray with bangs when she was five, she likes her hair long.
I regret the bangs incident, not because of any harm to her hair. But because of how I did it for me, not her. At the time, her hair kept getting into her eyes, and she didn't like wearing clips or hairbands. As we were about to start VBS camp, and it was summer, I "convinced" her it would be a good idea. She was 5. She didnt care that her hair covered her eyes from time to time. She would just brush it away and move on. I cared, though. I thought it looked messy and I would be judged for not keeping her hair neat.

Over the years, as I continue on my journey to trust my children, to respect WHO they are, and to live in partnership with them, the "bangs incident" as we refer to it, has become an example of an important lesson for me. It's HER hair. Being a child does not lessen the right she has to keep her hair the way she wants. Being her parent does not give me the right to demand her to keep it the way I want.

As a child, my hair was just another area where I had little control. It was never, "would you like"; rather, "it's time to cut your hair". It seems like a "minor" thing, but it is in these small acts of living that our children learn that they have inherent rights to their own personhood.

Great article that clarifies education vs schoolin Great article that clarifies education vs schooling. It's an excellent reminder that self directed education (whether individually or in consent based groups) was the norm for centuries before government mandated schooling.

This thought has been percolating in my mind. Hav This thought has been percolating in my mind. Have we lost touch with the natural state of being with our children, enjoying their company, delighting in them? I understand this is a stressful time. All the more reason to just BE with your kids, give them space, time, and your loving attention. Our children feel safe through their connection with us. BE their safe haven.

This is a big deal because my son spends a good chunk of time gaming and the controller has been instrumental in helpibg him develop his fine motor skills. (He has cerebral palsy.) *** My daughter looked up how to clean the remote, and within minutes, she and my husband took it apart and started cleaning and troubleshooting. ***
